barcode
A linear stripe barcode encoding a short value, optionally with that value printed underneath.
When to reach for it
Against a QR code, choose barcode when the reader on the other end requires a named symbology — CODE_128, EAN_13, EAN_8, CODE_39 or UPC_A — since those are the only formats offered and each constrains what the value may contain.
