Generate templates with AI

Generate a draft

  1. Click Generate with AI in the editor bar, or the Prompt AI card on Home.
  2. Drop a reference image or PDF, describe what you want, or do both. Both are optional, but add at least one.
  3. Optionally choose a Paper.
  4. Click Generate.

The AI first works out the document's structure, then builds it section by section. You get an editable draft in a new designer session. Refine it, then Save. It never replaces a saved template.

A draft is a starting point, not a pixel-perfect copy. Sections that can't be generated come out empty and you're told how many.

From a reference

  • Logos and photos are your own. A logo, crest or photo in your reference is cut out of it and placed as an image in the draft, at the size it has there. Without a reference, an image is a placeholder you fill in.
  • It checks its own work once. Right after generating from a reference, the AI panel compares a render of the draft with your reference and fixes what differs: missing heading-row colours, a bar that should be inset, colours, sizes. This check is free and appears as a step called Checked against your reference, so one ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z) undoes it.
What leaves your account

Only the image or PDF and the text you enter go to the AI provider. Your saved templates and render data are never sent.

How the paper is chosen

PrioritySource
1The Paper you pick in the dialog
2The page size of your reference PDF
3The AI's own pick from your description

Leave Paper on Automatic (the AI picks) to use rules 2 and 3.

The AI also picks the document direction (left to right or right to left) from the language of the document, and the fonts from the font picker.

Refine one section

  1. Select a section (band) of the document.
  2. In its properties panel, type what to change in the box that says Change "…" (for example "make the total bold, add a due date"), then press Enter or click Change with AI.

Only that section's elements are replaced. To change the whole document, use Improve with AI (below). The AI sees your current document, including hand edits. Brand colours in the section become fixed colours; see Brand colours.

Improve it in steps

When a draft is close but not right, use the AI view of the right panel: click AI at the top of the panel, next to Properties, or click Generate with AI in the top bar (on an empty page that opens the generation dialog instead). AI changes the whole document, not one section. It stays open while you click around the page, so you can watch each change and type the next one, and a step keeps running if you switch to Properties.

  • Tell it what to change. Type an instruction (for example "make the header shorter, add a notes section above the totals") and click Apply.
  • Match the reference. If you generated from an image or PDF, it stays attached as the panel's reference. Match the reference renders your current draft, puts it next to the reference and fixes what differs: sizes, spacing, positions, missing pieces. You can add or replace the reference in the panel. For a PDF, its page 1 is compared with your page 1.

Each step:

  • is one undo (⌘Z / Ctrl+Z puts the document back as it was);
  • appears under Steps, where Restore brings back any earlier one (also one undo);
  • leaves sections the AI didn't need to change exactly as they were, including your hand edits;
  • uses one AI credit. A step that finds nothing to change, or that fails, is free.

Save a new draft after its step finishes (saving waits while one runs). If you or a collaborator edit a section while the AI works on it, you choose: apply all, apply only the other sections, or discard the step.

The steps list is kept in this browser tab, and survives a draft's first save. The reference is kept on this device for the template.

Monthly limit

Generation has a monthly limit. When you reach it, the dialog tells you. The limit depends on your plan and may differ while Paperwright is in beta.
